Madge M. Meyer

Madge M. Meyer - a public speaker, award-winning author, and the founder of “Madge Meyer Consulting, LLC” - is known for her unique yet practical approach to advancing innovation and leadership throughout entire organizations. Her book, which is titled “The Innovator’s Path” and subtitled “How Individuals, Teams, and Organizations Can Make Innovation Business as Usual”, was published by John Wiley & Sons in 2013 and is a 2014 Axiom Business Book Award winner in the Success/Motivation/Coaching category.

Madge was the Executive Vice President, Chief Innovation Officer and Technology Fellow at State Street Corporation.  She has been assisting MIT Collaborative Initiatives in bringing innovative solutions to problems broadly ranging from global sustainability to healthcare, education, and veterans’ reintegration.

 

Madge has been recognized with 16personal awards and honors for her industry and community achievements, including Bank Systems & Technology “Elite 8 Innovators” and Bank Technology News “10th Annual Innovators List,” which both honor executives who leverage innovation for competitive advantage. She has been named as “Woman of the Year for 2013/2014” by the National Association for Professional Woman (NAPW).  She was also initiated as a Simmons School of Management 2013 Chapter Honoree, into the International Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society. Under her leadership, Madge’s teams at State Street were also recognized with 32 awards for innovation and excellence, including 12 IT environmental sustainability honors.

Prior to joining State Street, Madge served as First Vice President for Merrill Lynch’s Enterprise Technology Services. Earlier in her career, she was a scientific programmer working for IBM on the NASA Orbital Spaceflights. Later, she advanced through several executive positions at IBM. She is currently a Trustee for the Boston Children’s Museum, a  member of the DNA Medicine Institute Business Advisory Board, a member of the Global Advisory Board of Finance & Risk Management International School of Renmin University of China, and also several advisory boards for venture capital and non-profit institutions.

 

Madge is a graduate in mathematics and chemistry from the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor and is commemorated as the 2010 Honoree on their College of Business Wall of Fame. She also continued graduate study in mathematics at St. Louis University, until IBM launched her IT odyssey one memorable summer, in New York City.

 

Madge believes passionately in making innovation “Business-as-Usual” –continually developing and implementing new ideas and solutions that create business value and increase competitive advantage.

Rati Thanawala
Advanced Leadership Initiative Fellow
Harvard University

Rati Thanawala is an Advanced Leadership Initiative Fellow at Harvard University. She has spent 39 years in the high-tech industry, the last 17 as an executive at Bell Labs.

At Bell Labs she pioneered the creation of techno-economic models for making complex risk/revenue/performance tradeoffs in emerging communication networking technologies. She established a global organization of 150 experts in 13 countries

and founded a business unit called Bell Labs Consulting that advises CEO's and Boards of companies globally on building future communication networks. Prior to that, she held executive positions at AT&T, Lucent, Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia, including product management, business and market management, and R&D.

 

Rati came to the US from India on a Rotary International Graduate Scholarship and spoke extensively at Rotary Clubs in the US. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from Yale University. She also attended Harvard Business School’s Program for Management Development. She has two daughters – a lawyer and a neuroscientist.

 

Rati has mentored many women and minorities throughout her career. She believes that, at each stage of a career, an Asian woman can smartly create a brand identity for herself that she can change with time as she masters each phase in her career. Even though the challenges are significant, there are levers from her Asian heritage, as well as other unique experiences and skills that she can leverage - done the right way, this can create fulfillment and success in a difficult environment. In parallel, there is big culture change needed in the workplaces - for this, a lot depends on the men and women who are in positions of power to champion the change. Many managers and executives support this, but many (including Asian men) are confused on exactly what they can do to make it easier for Asian women to feel included, to have influence, and ultimately rise to roles that have big impact.

 

Rati is now working on a program to help women, specially minority women, succeed in the workplace–both by creating strategies for the women managing multiple dominant identities in challenging workplaces, and by finding solutions that help organizations and managers create a more level playing field.

Lauren Cheung
Filmmaker And Animator

Lauren Cheung is a filmmaker and animator based in NYC. She works as an assistant to a film director and has been published in the New York Times for her science animations. She worked as a Director’s Guild of America Trainee on several TV shows such as Law & Order SVU and The Americans. Her latest short film, Bloom, showed at the Boston Asian American Film Festival and the Herstory Cinephilia Society. She graduated from Brown University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. Her goal is to bring diversity both on screen and behind the camera through inclusive storytelling.

Richard Hwang

Richard (Ruey-ching) earned a BS in Pharmacy from Taiwan National University in 1984, Ph.D. degree in Pharmaceutics from the University of Iowa in 1992, and MS degree in Supply Chain Management from Michigan State University in 2018. He also has an MBA degree. Prior to his current position, Richard was the head of clinical supply manufacturing organization for 8 years (Groton, CT from 2007 to 2011 and Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor, MI from 2003 to 2007). Richard joined Pharmacia in 2001 and

was the Director of Solids Formulation & Clinical Manufacturing with Pharmacia in Kalamazoo, MI. Before joining Pharmacia, Richard worked for G.D. Searle in Skokie, IL and Mallinckrodt in St. Louis, MO, and his positions included formulation scientist, project leader, project manager, and research manager. Richard is a Six Sigma Black Belt certified, has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles and 3 book chapters, and presented more than 60 podium and poster presentations in the areas of compressibility/compatibility, formulation/process optimization, DOE, and cleaning validation. In addition, Richard is an Editorial Advisory Board member for Pharmaceutical Technology and International Journal of Experimental Design and Process Optimization (IJEDPO).

Pauline Huie

Pauline Huie is an organizational development and talent management professional who has over 20 years of corporate experience with broad business acumen. She has worked in various industries, ranging from healthcare, hi-tech to banking and financial services for companies such as Merck, Gillette, Dale Carnegie, and Partners Healthcare. She is an experienced manager, leading and managing various sales teams as well as learning and talent development functions.
 

She is currently a Sr. Organizational Development consultant at UMass Memorial Healthcare where she partners and drives OD services across the system. She is passionate around her work in developing leaders and teams, executing culture and change management initiatives, coaching and diversity & inclusion.

She holds a B.S. in Management and an M.Ed. from the University of Massachusetts. She has graduate certificates in Human Resources from Villanova University and Organizational Leadership from Regents University. She is also Lean Green Belt certified.

James Loo

James Loo works in management consulting for Deloitte. His leadership was recently awarded for saving 30+ lives via his role in a cancer cure CAR T clinical trial. Prior experience includes leading his family owned life-sciences corporation with operations in 40 countries, private equity at Blackstone, and serving in intelligence services for the U.S. Government. He leads Deloitte’s Asian BRG and is a board officer for Ascend NE. Community roles include serving on the steering committee of the Dana Farber Unmask Cancer Fund and as an advisor to the 2019 Harvard Chan School of Public Health Practicum.

Brittany Loring

The Brittany Fund For Trauma And Recovery

Brittany Loring was critically injured in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. In June of 2013, she founded a nonprofit called the Brittany Fund for Trauma and Recovery to provide financial support for individuals injured in traumatic events such as natural disasters, car accidents, and acts of terror, among others. The Brittany Fund for Trauma and Recovery hosts a 5k/10k race each year and has a Boston Marathon team each year. To date, the Brittany Fund has provided over 73 beneficiaries with checks and given out more than $180,000. You can check out www.brittanyfund.org for more information and to find out about future events. Brittany Loring is also a Manager in International Tax Services at PwC in Boston. She graduated with her BA from UMass Amherst and received her JD and MBA from Boston College in 2013.

Pauline Mak is a partner in KPMG LLP's Boston federal tax practice. Pauline has 29 years of experience serving technology, life sciences, and manufacturing clients in Massachusetts and California. She is experienced in both transactional and operational tax issues relating to publicly and privately held companies with multistate and international operations. Pauline has extensive experience with ASC 740, Accounting for Income Taxes, including tax accounting issues related to uncertainty in 

income taxes, business combinations, and share based payments. She also assists clients in income tax accounting issues under IFRS and in conversion from US GAAP to IFRS. Pauline serves as a national instructor for KPMG and a frequent speaker on accounting for income tax topics.
 
Pauline’s experience has also included a rotational assignment to KPMG’s Washington National Tax Practice in the Accounting Methods Group where she advised on technical tax matters and wrote technical memoranda on new developments for firmwide distribution. 
 
Pauline is a past president and an advisory board member of the New England chapter of Ascend, a professional organization dedicated to enabling its members, business partners and the community to leverage the leadership and global business potential of Pan-Asians. She also serves as the Treasurer for the Hong Kong Association of Massachusetts. Pauline is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants. She is a graduate of California State University at Long Beach with a degree in finance and accounting. She earned her master’s degree in business taxation from the University of Southern California.

Mon Chau is a new Partner at Deloitte & Touche LLP where she serves some of the firm’s largest investment management clients. Outside of the firm, Mon serves as an Executive Advisor for Ascend NE, and as a vice-chair for the annual City Year Women’s Leadership Breakfast. Mon was honored by the Boston Business Journal 40 under 40 for her community involvement. Mon is a member of the American Institute of CPA’s and is licensed in Massachusetts. Mon graduated from BU with a BS in Business Administration, Accounting, and minor in Chinese.
